A Unique Rug Collection Inspired by India’s Stepwells for Interior Design Taipei
Embracing the Legacy of India’s Stepwells
Our latest exclusive rug collection, created in collaboration with Interior Design Taipei, draws inspiration from the ancient stepwells of India. These architectural marvels, known as ‘Vav’ or ‘Baoli’ in Rajasthan, were once pivotal in water management and served as central spaces for spiritual and community gatherings.
Stepwells provided much-needed shelter and refuge from the intense heat, particularly for women fetching water. Despite their decline due to modernization, efforts are underway to preserve these cultural treasures. At Interior Design Taipei, we are passionate about highlighting such historical elements through our designs.
Craftsmanship with a Conscience: The Role of cc-tapis
We partnered with cc-tapis for this exclusive rug collection because of their dedication to sustainable and artisanal practices. Each rug is crafted from premium Himalayan wool sourced near their workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal. The production process is entirely handcrafted, adhering to time-honored techniques that have been perfected over generations.
The creation of each rug involves several meticulous steps: the wool is carded and spun by skilled artisans, dyed by expert colorists, and knotted by Tibetan craftspeople. Final touches, including hand-cutting and embossing, are performed by a dedicated team. cc-tapis is renowned for its eco-friendly approach and commitment to social responsibility, such as supporting education through their non-profit initiative.
Translating Architectural Beauty into Textiles
The hand-knotting technique used for these rugs is a traditional method prevalent in regions like India and China. Each rug features up to 232,000 knots per square meter, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship involved. Production spans between 14 to 17 weeks, reflecting the detailed work invested in each piece.
The designs capture the essence of stepwells through delicate color gradients and varied textures crafted from hand-dyed wool. Our artisans in Nepal use different pile heights and textures to represent the architectural complexity of these historical structures, bringing a touch of this heritage into modern Taipei interiors.
